Financial Assistance
Financial Resources for International Study

The cost of study abroad varies among different programs based on the cost associated with traveling to a specific location, the duration of the program, the sponsoring institution, etc. The good news is that there are several financial resources available to you; you just need to dedicate some time to inquire about your options.

Study abroad can be very affordable, especially if you qualify for any of the following resources:

  • In most cases, you can use any financial aid you are currently receiving to participate in a Texas State study abroad program. Contact the Texas State Office of Financial Aid for more information about this option.

  • If you are an undergraduate student enrolled at Texas State with a GPA of 2.75 or higher or a Texas State graduate student with a GPA of 3.25 or higher, you can apply for the International Education Fee Scholarship (IEFS). Each year Texas State students receive this scholarship, with about $185,000 available annually for study abroad. Read more about the IEFS and apply by downloading IEFS Information and Application.

Note: Students who apply to study abroad in a country for which the U.S. Department of State has issued a travel warning are not eligible for the IEFS.

Note: If you do not already have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, you will need to download it to open these documents. If you are unable to do so, you may also contact our office to request the IEFS application materials be sent to you.
Gilman International Scholarship Program
The Gilman International Scholarship Program was established under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. Gilman Scholarships provide awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Although this program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, a limited number of scholarships for study in Western Europe are available. For current application deadlines, eligibility details, an application form, and further information, please check www.iie.org/gilman.
Freeman Awards for Study Abroad in Asia Program
The Freeman Awards for Study Abroad in Asia Program (Freeman-ASIA Program) offers awards of up to $7,000 to U.S. students needing the financial support to study abroad in East/Southeast Asia. The primary goal of the  Freeman-ASIA Program is to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia by providing them with the information and financial assistance they will need. Awardees are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia by others, and to spread greater understanding of the Asian culture within their home communities.

For more information, full eligibility criteria, and the online application, please access the Freeman-ASIA Program website.
Exchange Programs
If you decide to participate in any of the exchange programs offered by Texas State, your tuition and fees will be basically the same as they would be were you studying on campus.
Foundations and Private and Public Organizations
In addition to the financial assistance you can pursue at Texas State, there are resources such as foundations and private and public organizations that provide financial assistance for study abroad. Private organizations and associations related to your field of study or destination are worth consulting, as well as ethnic organizations.
